Quick recap: grizzly bears fall in the city of angels

The Memphis Grizzlies returned to the same arena on Sunday night, after a huge Saturday night win over the Los Angeles Clippers. A back to back with the teams of the city of angels, could Lebron James and the the Los Angeles Lakers slow down the grizzly bears that roam? Or, could Memphis continue their quick start to the season?

First shift:

The Memphis Grizzlies pounced on the Lakers early on at the Staples Center. Memphis took a 10-4 lead over Los Angeles early in the first quarter. For Memphis, their breakneck pace in some cases led to missed opportunities in the first quarter. The Lakers rallied towards the end of the first quarter. Carmelo Anthony came in for Los Angeles off the bench, providing a spark and propelling the Lakers to a 29-24 lead over Memphis at the end of a quarter.

Second quarter:

The Grizzlies’ energy as a whole has been low for most of the second quarter. At one point you could see head coach Taylor Jenkins screaming and clapping at his guys. Memphis was just being pushed around. Sloppy defense led to stagnant offensive possessions for the Grizzlies. Luckily for the Grizzlies, Ja Morant and Desmond Bane shot the ball very well over the arc in the first half. The Grizzlies were only down 62-56 heading into halftime at Staples.

Third quarter:

The third quarter Memphis came out of the locker room with a lot of energy. Specifically, Ja Morant, who is undoubtedly the driving force behind the Grizzlies. Morant scored 10 points in just the third quarter and captivated the opposing crowd at Staples Center – finishing around the edge, with circus shots and bursting with energy. After a halftime deficit, the Grizzlies rallied to regain the lead in the fourth quarter at 90-87.

Fourth trimester:

The Grizzlies stuck their feet in the mud throughout the fourth quarter. Despite some things that were wrong with the Grizzlies, they continued to fight. All the Grizzly who spoke in the second half fought until the final buzzer. The Grizzlies would fall to the Lakers in the dying seconds at Staples Center in Los Angeles 121-118.

Final statistics:

  • Ja Morant – 40 points, 10 assists, 13-21 FG
  • Desmond Bane – 17 points, 5 rebounds and 4 assists
  • Steven Adams – 14 points, 16 rebounds and 6 assists

The Grizzlies will be back in action Wednesday night as they travel to Portland to take on the Trail Blazers at 9:00 p.m. ET.
