LA CROSSE, Wis. (WKBT) – The La Crosse Jazz Orchestra’s free Jazz in the Park series continues with âA Trumpet Stormâ featuring two notable guest artists at 7 p.m. Sunday at Riverside Park.
Brent Turney, a trumpet virtuoso with the Chicago Jazz Orchestra, will perform “Maria” from trumpet legend Maynard Fergusson in “West Side Story” and the famous “Joy Spring” by Clifford Brown. Turney will play additional selections in homage to Gordon Goodwin’s great west coast band and bebop great trumpeter Kenny Dorham.
La Crosse Jazz Orchestra director Greg Balfany describes Turney “as perhaps the first principal trumpeter in the entire Midwest.”
Also on the program is Eau singer / actress Claire Cathy Reitz, who will perform performances of âI Won’t Danceâ by Ella Fitzgerald, âBlack Coffeeâ by Julie London and music by Diane Schurr and Natalie Cole.
The Cavalier Theater is the alternative place if it rains.
The series will end on Sunday, August 1 with Wisconsin’s best-known jazz singer, Janet Planet, as the featured artist.
