Jazz and R&B shows fill SOPAC’s 2021-22 season

(SOUTH ORANGE, NJ) – The 2021-2022 season at the South Orange Performing Arts Center features thirteen jazz and rhythm and blues shows. The lineup includes Grammy Award winners Lisa Fischer, Dee Dee Bridgewater and Bill Charlap, as well as the National Endowment for the Arts Jazz Masters Terri Lyne Carrington and Eddie Palmieri. Audiences can experience everything from world famous musical machines like the Dirty Dozen Brass Band to exciting pioneers like trumpeter Bria Skonberg.

SEPTEMBER 17 Motor City Revue: The Ultimate Motown Tribute; Tickets: $ 25- $ 35. Dance in your seat and sing along as this Motown-inspired group of 11 musicians perform to tunes from Smokey Robinson & The Miracles, Marvin Gaye, The Temptations, The Supremes and more.

SEPTEMBER 25 Billie & Blue Eyes presented by John Pizzarelli & Catherine Russell: The Songs of Frank Sinatra & Billie Holiday; Tickets: $ 48- $ 68. This dynamic duo will transport audiences to jazz’s heyday with masterful ease, capturing the effortless grace of Holiday and the cool swagger of Sinatra.

OCTOBER 1ST Bria Skonberg Quartet; Tickets: $ 29- $ 39. Described as “one of the most versatile and imposing musicians of her generation” (the Wall Street newspaper) and “the bright hope of hot jazz” (New York Times), triple threat trailblazer Bria Skonberg is a force to be reckoned with. This award-winning trumpeter, singer and songwriter made her SOPAC debut by combining her signature sound of fiery trumpet and smoky voice. She mixes jazz, blues and beyond with adventurous tales and concoctions of classics and moving originals.

OCTOBER 15 Kindred the family soul; Tickets: $ 42- $ 77. Married couple Fatin Dantzler and Aja Graydon are known for their music that comes straight from the heart. The duo co-write mature and relevant R&B songs that are rooted in traditional soul and gospel. They were also part of the Neo Soul Philadelphia movement which included Jill Scott.

20 NOVEMBER The giants of jazz; Tickets: $ 55- $ 65. Join us for what has become a legendary event in South Orange Village featuring countless jazz greats in an unforgettable evening of music.

DECEMBER 11 Terri Lyne Carrington + Social Sciences: Jazz and Gender Justice; Tickets: $ 44 to $ 59. This three-time Grammy Award-winning jazz drummer has been described as “the personification of Black Girl Magic” by the AP News. After years of performing alongside jazz royalty like Wayne Shorter and Herbie Hancock, Carrington has reached the pinnacle of jazz excellence in his own career as a 2021 member of the National Endowment for the Arts Jazz Masters. With her group Social Science, she steps out from behind the drums to be a leader in social and gender justice movements.

DECEMBER 16 Hot Sardine Holiday Stomp; Tickets: $ 40- $ 50. Experience a raucous and dazzling celebration featuring party classics of jazz and swing and original tunes performed by the eight-piece group. Their brassy brass arrangements and catchy piano melodies combined with a singer’s voice will transport listeners to a bygone era.

FEBRUARY 10 Be My Valentine: An Evening of Love Songs with Ms. Lisa Fischer; Tickets: $ 32 to $ 42. Known for her long-term touring associations with the Rolling Stones, Luther Vandross and Tina Turner, this powerful Grammy Award-winning Gospel and Soul singer evokes endless emotion.

FEBRUARY 18 James’ six hunters; Tickets: $ 36- $ 56. The British soulman and his longtime backing band bring you a sublime night of no-frills blues. Through their virtuosity, they have shared the stage with artists as diverse as Allen Toussaint, Sharon Jones and Van Morrison.

MARCH 13 Dee Dee Bridgewater and Bill Charlap; Tickets: $ 40 to $ 54. These two renowned Grammy Award winners ignite their musical chemistry to generate an incomparable Jazz experience.

MARCH 20TH Celebrate the Sounds of New Orleans with Dirty Dozen Brass Band & Nathan and The Zydeco Cha Chas; Tickets: $ 35- $ 48. This special double poster featuring two world famous music machines celebrates the feel-good sounds of The Big Easy!

APRIL 7 SFJAZZ collective; Tickets: $ 58- $ 78. The SFJAZZ collective is an award-winning supergroup made up of eight of the best performers / songwriters working in jazz today. The current ensemble includes Lizz Wright on vocals, Chris Potter and David Sánchez on saxophones, Etienne Charles on trumpet, Warren Wolf on vibraphone, Edward Simon on keyboards, Aneesa Strings on bass and Kendrick AD Scott on drums.

MAY 21ST Latin jazz group Eddie Palmieri; Tickets: $ 45 to $ 59. The iconic ten-time Grammy Award and NEA Jazz Master skillfully merges the rhythm of his Puerto Rican heritage with the complexity of his influences: Thelonious Monk, Herbie Hancock and McCoy Tyner as well as his older brother, Charlie Palmieri.

Since 2006, Orange Sud Performing Arts Center (SOPAC) has been a leading performing arts center in the region. SOPAC offers innovative artistic and cultural experiences to diverse audiences in an intimate and inviting environment. The arts center hosts a variety of performances, community events and educational programs for all ages.
