The Global Citizen Festival 2021 is upon us, with hundreds of artists, activists and advocacy organizations working together this weekend to inspire awareness, seek unity and bring about global change.
Ed Sheeran, Elton John, Billie Eilish, Stevie Wonder, Shawn Mendes and BTS are among the artists volunteering their time for the event, which takes place over a 24-hour period starting on Saturday.
Scheduled for the United Nations General Assembly and G20 climate meetings, the festival culminates with Global Citizen Live, a 24-hour music festival spanning six continents and featuring hundreds of the world’s best artists and celebrities.
What is the Global Citizen Festival?
The Global Citizen Festival is one of the main events and outreach initiatives of Global Citizen, an organization founded in 2008, with the goal of ending extreme poverty in the world by 2030.
The music festival, dubbed ‘Global Citizen Live’, is part of Global Citizen’s Global Recovery Plan for the World, a year-long campaign to help end Covid-19 by calling on governments, philanthropists and the private sector to financial commitments to help ‘kickstart a fair global recovery’.
When is the Global Citizen Festival? Date, start time, tickets
The 2021 Global Citizen Music Festival officially kicks off on Saturday, September 25 at 2 p.m. ET / 11 a.m. PT.
Tickets for the show are selling out quickly, but we’ve spotted some good seats still available through VividSeats.com for the show at The Great Lawn, Central Park in New York, and the Greek Theater in Los Angeles. Vivid Seats offers tickets starting at just $ 18 at the time of writing.
Doors will open at 2 p.m. ET for the show in Central Park, with performances starting around 4 p.m. ET. The doors to the Greek Theater show open at 5:30 p.m. PT, with performers taking the stage in LA at 7 p.m. PT. Who performs at Global Citizen Live?
Global Citizen Live is one of the most ambitious live events ever, featuring performances by artists spanning six continents and multiple time zones. Here is the current list of artists by city (although the organizers have also promised surprise guests).

A number of artists will perform from sound stages and locations around the world. Although they do not appear in person at the concert venue, their performances can still be streamed live online.

What are the objectives of the Global Citizen Festival?
While the Global Citizen Festival promises to be full of memorable performances, there is a larger goal in mind. The organization says artists and presenters are joining together to call for responsibility and action from G7 and EU leaders. Among their demands: that the G7 and the EU immediately share at least one billion doses of the Covid-19 vaccine with those who need it most; that the richest nations donate $ 100 billion a year to meet the climate needs of developing countries; encourage businesses to help reduce emissions by joining Race to Zero and planting a billion trees by 2022; and for the G7 and the world’s billionaires to end the hunger crisis by contributing at least $ 6 billion “for the urgent provision of millions of meals to the 41 million people on the brink of famine.”
Is Global Citizen a non-profit organization?
While Global Citizen works with world leaders, it is seen as an “advocacy organization” rather than an NGO. Global Citizen is also registered as a 501 (c) (3) nonprofit, according to CharityNavigator.org.
